BNZ Theatre Opening

January 21, 2026

Last night, Trust Waikato staff and trustees joined the celebration for the opening of the new BNZ Theatre – an incredible milestone for our region.

As one of the early funders of this long-held vision, it is wonderful to see the doors now open and the community stepping into a space designed for storytelling, creativity, and connection.

The Theatre adds a significant new asset to the Waikato arts ecosystem, sitting proudly alongside other local and community theatres, tertiary arts programmes, school arts initiatives, and the many community groups that nurture talent and creativity across the Waikato.

Research consistently shows that strong arts and cultural involvement strengthens community wellbeing, supports local economies, and helps regions thrive. Last night was a reminder of how powerful these spaces can be for bringing people together.

It was a privilege to witness the hundreds of Waikato performers of all ages step into the spotlight for the premiere of To The Stars – Ki Ngā Whetū directed by Creative Waikato CEO Dr Jeremy Mayall and Courteney Mayall.

Congratulations to everyone who has worked tirelessly to bring this theatre to life.
