Trust Waikato was honoured to join Community Trusts from across Aotearoa at the recent Te Tiriti o Waitangi Waananga hosted by Toi Foundation in Ngaamotu.
The two‑day gathering created an important space to deepen our understanding of Te Tiriti and reflect on how we, as funding kaitiaki, can contribute to equitable, community‑led outcomes in our rohe.
The waananga brought together iwi leaders, hapuu representatives, practitioners and philanthropic peers to explore themes such as:
• decolonising philanthropy
• supporting Maaori aspirations in a post‑settlement context
• authentic partnerships with iwi, hapuu and communities
• participatory and community‑led funding models
These koorero highlighted both the opportunities and responsibilities we hold in our sector.
A standout moment was the incredible performance by the world‑famous Paatea Maaori Club, whose artistry, heritage and cultural excellence added depth, connection and celebration to the evening.
At Trust Waikato, our vision is to support thriving, inclusive communities through approaches grounded in kotahitanga, manaakitanga and long‑term relationships. Honouring Te Tiriti means listening to iwi and hapuu, recognising their leadership, and ensuring our funding systems uplift their aspirations.
We extend our sincere thanks to Toi Foundation for their leadership and manaakitanga, and to all presenters and participants who shared generously.
