Our approach

Trust Waikato aims to achieve transformational change for people, whaanau, communities, and places where the need is greatest. Our strengths-based approach and commitment to supporting community aspirations underpin our Mana Whakahaere practice. We are guided by our Ngaa Pou Rautaki and strategic priorities.

Who we fund

In general, Trust Waikato funds for-purpose groups that

Operate mainly in the Waikato region (or provide services within our region)

Have a bank account and annual financial statements

Have a charitable purpose

Where we fund

Our funding area incorporates Thames–Coromandel, Hauraki, Matamata–Piako, Waipaa, Waikato, South Waikato, Waitomo, Ootorohanga and Ruapehu districts, and Hamilton city based on the boundaries set through legislation in 1964.

It includes much of the lands of the Tainui waka, and the people of Waikato, Raukawa, Hauraki and Maniapoto iwi.

What we fund

Trust Waikato funds initiatives that increase community vibrancy and aspirations, quality of life, resilience, participation, and inclusiveness in the areas of:

  • Culture and arts
  • Community Development
  • Environment
  • Sports and recreation
  • Tangata whenua
  • Wellbeing

There are however a few things we generally will not make grants towards.

How we fund

We have three funding rounds each year where we consider applications. Generally, groups can only receive one Community Response grant each calendar year. Organisations will be notified of the grant decision within 12 weeks of the round closing.

Accountability Requirements

An online accountability report will be required either when a group makes a subsequent application or within 12 months of receiving a grant, whichever comes first.

The level of accountability detail varies with the size and type of grant. This is outlined in section 12 of the Grants Policy.
